Happy St. George's Day, 2011.

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

Is there any better way to honour our patron saint other than drinking a chilled glass of a pleasantly crisp, white English wine in the English countryside? I think not.
Happy St. George's Day to my family, friends, and anyone who loves England as much as I do.

Ah yes, the Syrian-born warrior and dragon slayer who gave Diocletian a run for his money...until...

How did George come to be venerated in England? Was it a Bede proclamation?

I'll answer that Thomas: he moved here, to a small council castle in Solihull, because the beer was better - and cheaper. It's quite thirsty work doing-in dragons.

And Happy St George's Day to you VG.....although we should just remember that the quote is the first half of John of Gaunt's dying speech when he despaired of the mess England had got itself into:

"This land of such dear souls, this dear dear land,
Dear for her reputation through the world,
Is now leased out, I die pronouncing it,
Like to a tenement or pelting farm:
.......
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself."

It will be a lot better a) when that idiot Vince Cable is sacked, b) the idiotic AV is rejected resoundingly, and c) we elect Vinogirl as our new Leaderene!

Gosh I feel shamed after reading your scholarly answers, I'll just read and agree especially with someone who can recite an actual verse!
