Sugar levels.

I tested the sugar in the Pinot grigio grapes for the first time today. Using a handheld refractometer I took a simple measurement of the fermentable sugars available in a 100 berry sample from the vineyard and came up with a reading of 23.2 °Brix.  Not bad, for starters.
The 2016 growing season has been uncharacteristically cool and rather reminiscent of the 2010 growing season, methinks.  The month of August has been much cooler than is normal, so ripening has slowed down for everyone in the Napa Valley.  But the fruit looks great in Vinoland, so I think the future is looking sweet.

Earlier today, while walking the poodle, I stepped into the Konstantin Frank vineyards and tasted a few gewurztraminer grapes as well as pinot noir grapes. The former are close to ready for picking--and they go over the hill real fast if you miss the day they are ready. The latter are tight with another few weeks to go.

Wach variety seemed rather compact, a condition of the serious 2016 Finger Lakes drought.

Sorry, Dennis: I paint, play piano and write, but I don't seem able to wrap my head around photography--or my eyes either.

Oops, make that Each not Wach.

Tomasso: One day I will have to visit the Finger Lake vineyards, especially seeing as I have read about your region quite a bit lately. Clusters look of a normal size here, but of course Vinoland is sufficiently irrigated.

Thomas: Ha! It is apparent that you are a Renaissance man; it's no wonder you are friends with VG;)

Dennis:

When I can take photos as good as the ones VG takes, I will consider I have completed the circle.

In my home, my wife is the photograper; she's also quite a good writer, and a fine computer graphic designer; but she can't paint and she certainly can't play the piano!

I have been trying to surrepticiously to woo VG to visit the Finger Lakes region. I'm getting close to success. When she does come here you should try to meet us here as well. Better hurry, though. Our place is for sale.

Thomas: Thank you for the invite; I don't travel much, but would love to pay you a visit. However, since I take care of a quadriplegic, I'm lucky to get a week off a year. I wouldn't be able to even think about it until next summer, but if you are still there and the stars align themselves just right. . .;)
I had the feeling you LOVED your property?
