Happy St. George's Day, 2015.

There'll always be an England,
And England shall be free
If England means as much to you
As England means to me
.  Ross Parker.

Happy St. George's Day to my family, friends, and anyone who loves England as much as I do.

St George's day is celebrated in about 17 countries, including places like Palestine, Iraq, and Serbia..

Thomas true enough but you should be in England today, its ours.

I should be In England today--it's snowing here!

NHW: Thud and I bestow upon you, honorary Englishman-dom for the day.
Good photo. Incidentally, Battenberg happens to be one of Thud's favourite cakes :)

Tomasso: If one of the countries you cited even vaguely resembled a functioning, first world civilisation I suppose that they just might've been able to claim St. George as their own. As it is, their regrettable authoritarianism (and I'm being kind here) only serves to reinforce that St. George belongs to England and England alone. Everyone outside of the U.S. recognises that.
Enjoy that spring snow.

Thud: Ha! Once more unto the breach, dear brother.

Love England too - but had forgotten about St George's Day (and what it meant!)

VG:

George is among the interesting saints/martyrs. The only Christian saint that Muslims recognize, and the only saint of the Roman and Crusades era that the Reformation allowed to remain in status.

He is of course the patron saint of England--mostly thanks to Bede--but he is also a major saint in Eastern church rites as well as in just about all Christian sects.

An interesting saint indeed...and to think he was born in the Greek world.
