Auberge du Soleil.

Vinomaker and I, enjoyed a celebratory dinner last night with my co-workers, proving that the abysmal economy cannot keep a good Cabernet sauvignon down.
Auberge du Soleil happens to be my very favourite restaurant in the Napa Valley.  In the past, I have delighted in many wonderful dishes at this most exquisite of fine dining restaurants, last night's offerings being no exception - the squab, pictured above, was delicious.  I wish I could go more often, but it is just so expensive.  Auberge du Soleil is however a perfect example of the old maxim - you get what you pay for.

I guess your squab (pigeon, right?) was farmed? In Turnipia, where I live, there are a zillion wild pigeon, all getting fat on the local crops. It's delicious, ultra-sustainable, and yet one never sees it at the butcher's. I propose a major cull - not least because it would stop them cr4pping on my motorbikes.
In a similar vein,a London supermarket started selling squirrel meat recently. That's rather nice too, but predictably the "ah they're lovely fluffy things" brigade did their usual "outraged of Hampstead" thing!

Yes Affer, the pigeon was farmed (Paine Farm, in Sonoma) and it was very tasty. Calling it squab makes it palatable to the more squeamish amongst us.

Squirrels? Funny, Vinomaker thinks the local population of squirrels here (the red ones, the grey are shier) would make an excellent pie filling!

As a man of simple tastes my local chippy and scouse on a saturday will ahve to do.

Thud, your tastes don't seem so simple when you are whipping up a spicy bucatini or, better still, a Hungarian goulash!

What do you mean the grey squirrels are shier? Them's the critters that have forced-out the native red squirrels from all but a few small areas of the UK! In fact, I'm shocked to discover you actually have the red variety in the States.

Red squirrels = good.
Grey squirrels = bad. ;-)

Leon, I know, my brother complains about the grey squirrels at home often. But here, the varmints that I call 'red' squirrels are very aggressive, whilst the Western Grey Squirrels stay well away from humans - and the bird feeder. I am not quite sure what species the redder one is (looks very like the Eastern Fox Squirrel, but I am not certain), but the one hanging upside down outside the window yesterday when I was eating breakfast was very cheeky indeed!

When I return to England the grey squirrel population is due to get much smaller.
