Veraison in Vinoland.

Spotted today in the Syrah block: the onset of veraison 2010.
I have spent a couple of afternoons this past week working in the vineyard and can report that veraison is starting to show on a few vines. And, when I say a few - I mean literally three vines. Actually, I am very surprised that it is happening at all as it only managed a whopping high of 70F today.
So far, the weather in 2010 has been pathetic!

Yes, well it may be toasty to us English but the grapevines are freezing their little bums off!

What does veraison mean please?

WH, it is the time in the season when vegetative growth ends and the fruit begins to ripen (soften and fill up with juice and sugar.) The lone mauve berry in the middle of the cluster of Syrah grapes is the onset of veraison here.

we are at the same stage in not so sunny UK (17th August) with the first few grapes going on the Pinot. Do you expect the rest to follow pretty quickly?

Guy, as of today I would say my Syrah is about 50% through, with still no warm weather forecast. By English standards however, the weather continues to be fantastic.

We saw that budburst pretty much happens all at once but at veraison each individual grape acts in its own sweet (excuse the pun) way!

Guy, individual grape flowers, on a cluster, push their calyptra off at different times, most probably determining (last May) which grape will turn purple first.
