I'm pooped, but I am finished with pruning (at 4.26 pm, to be exact). Hallelujah! It was a tough year, the rain has been incredible, this is the latest date ever that pruning has continued in Vinoland.
I don't normally drink on Sundays, but the end of pruning always calls for a bit of a celebration. I opened a bottle of something Vinomaker had given me on my birthday. Another Crémant D'Alsace, the Emile Boeckel Brut Rosé is a delightful wine - right down to the simulated pink leather label (complete with faux silver stitching). Quite pink, rather fizzy, very tasty. Love it!
A second reason to have a glass of bubbles (as if I needed one) is that it was Mother's Day in England today, so cheers to my Vinomum.
Phew. I'll sleep well tonight.

Happy Mother's Day, mum.
It is Mothering Sunday in England, or Mother's Day as it is more commonly known. And here is my mum, all smiley and young. In her day, my mother used to be fond of a glass of Merlot, or a nice Rioja, but she doesn't drink much anymore. However, her real poison was Cognac, preferably Martell, although she did have a soft spot for Louis XIII (Rémy Martin), thanks to Thud.
In England, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent and, as it has its origins in Christianity, is not really related to the American Mother's Day, which is celebrated in May (other than honouring mothers, that is). Of course, I am partial to the English Mother's Day because I am English. But also because it signals that the end of my Lenten fast is now only three weeks away. All things chocolate be warned. But, I digress.
Happy Mothering Sunday to all (English) mothers.

Mothering Sunday.
A heartfelt thank you to my mother, my sister and my sister-in-law on this Mothering Sunday. I wish I could be with you all in person, so that I could give each of you the biggest bouquet of spring flowers I could gather...along with my love and gratitude in recognition of a job well done!
Happy Mothering Sunday to all (English) mothers.

A helping hand.
I started to prune Vinoland's Syrah vines yesterday afternoon, but rain stopped play! Today, when I finally made it out into the vineyard, after my weekly phone call to Blighty, I was joined in the Syrah by a Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor). This beautiful butterfly fluttered from the vine on to my sleeve and then proceeded to get quite comfortable on my hand, then a vine, as I took his photograph. Most likely docile because of the 31 degree temps this morning, he was quite content to rest on my thumb, in the sunshine, until I got bored and unceremoniously dumped him on a stray daffodil - a Vinogirl has to prune!
