The rain has returned - with a vengeance. And it is forecast to rain every day for the next week. Disgusting weather. I suppose I should be thankful for bloom being a bit delayed this year, at least I don't have to worry about all this rain blasting the flowers off the vines. Sigh. What is a Vinogirl to do? Go wine tasting, of course.
A quick drive up Highway 29 (in heavy rain, light traffic) found me at Pestoni Family Estate Winery. I chose to visit Pestoni, established in 1892, as I wanted an authentic Napa Valley experience. Or should I say what the Napa Valley experience used to be. I have been feeling a little jaded with the wine industry lately (or rather the theme park direction the Napa valley seems to be heading in), so a quick dose of Napa Valley history seemed to be just what was needed.
A rather old-fashioned, brown tasting room, which seemed a tad dim on this grey day, the Pestoni experience was still a suitable antidote to the new, gimmicky wineries that seem, more and more, to be the way of wine's future in the Napa Valley. I was interested in tasting Pestoni's 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, their 2018 Rosé and their 2017 Sangiovese. So I did, and I liked all three wines sufficiently that I went ahead and purchased a bottle of each.
Upon leaving Pestoni I had to stop to let the Wine Train pass as it headed north. Whilst I waited, I braved the rain and took a photograph.

All aboard.
For lunch today Vinomum and I decided to take a trip up the valley on the Napa Valley Wine Train. It is almost two years since we last rode on the wine train together. Last time we were on the train we basically had it all to ourselves, as lots of visitors to the valley had cancelled their reservations due to the very recent, and rather large, earthquake (that had rattled a lot of nerves) in August 2014.
It was a perfectly gorgeous day for sitting back, enjoying the views and being waited on hand and foot - for three hours. I did not really have anything to drink, well, just a small glass of Chandon bubbles, because I was driving. But I sure ate a lot. A very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

View from a train.
Today, Vinomum and I had lunch on the Napa Valley Wine Train. We spent a leisurely 3 hours travelling up and down the valley (at about 15 miles per hour), gazing at moving vineyard-vistas, eating a three course meal and quaffing a bottle of Mumm Brut Prestige. Life could be worse.
The Wine Train was relatively quiet for what is considered peak season in the Napa Valley - harvest time. Our waiter informed us that a lot of prospective passengers had cancelled their reservations due to fears related to Sunday's earthquake. What a shame! I don't think there are many other pastimes that could possibly be much more soothing to frayed nerves than sipping bubbly whilst being unhurriedly ferried through beautifully calming scenery.
The wine list needs some help, and the waiter could do with brushing up on his facts a little bit, but other than that Vinomum and I had a wonderful afternoon ride on the Wine Train.

Wine Train crossing.
On the way home from work tonight, I had to stop on Jefferson Street in order to let the Wine Train cross traffic. It was hot and I was tired, but I didn't really mind because I'm quite fond of trains and I like seeing this particular train in action. Besides, it was fun to see the happy, most probably inebriated, tourists hanging off the end car waving to anybody and everybody in the hopes that someone might possibly wave back. So, I waved.

All aboard.

Two nights ago Vinomaker, myself, and two wonderful friends visiting from Wisconsin, took a trip on the Napa Valley Wine Train. The beautifully restored Pullman cars, dating from 1915 - 1917, comfortably accommodated us as we were served a wonderful meal (all the time marvelling at the sea-legs of the wait staff). Between mouthfuls, we gazed out at the astoundingly verdant vineyards in all their late spring glory, for all the world looking like a vast green ocean until, at last, the sun setting over the Mayacamas mountains altered Mother Nature's paint palate. A very enjoyable evening was had by all, it is certainly one I will remember for a long time.
It reminded me of a meal I had as a child in the revolving restaurant of St. John's Beacon, of an ever changing vista, and of a splendid sunset over Liverpool Bay.
You just can't buy memories like these.
