Little gems.
Leaf pulling in the Cabernet sauvignon vines today (and most of the week) exposing the fruit in preparation for harvest, I came across several little clusters, higher up in the canopy, that looked like little jewels. Vinodog 2 was my companion, as usual, whilst I performed this particular vineyard op...and then we were joined by the chickens. Very bucolic.

Happy 13th birthday V2!
My baby turns 13 years old today, she's now a teenager! Once again, I ask, how did that happen? Regrettably, the fluffy-love of my life has slowed down considerably over the past several months.
During quarantine we have been almost inseparable and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Vinodog 2 has been at my side in the vineyard all spring and summer long. She can no longer limbo under the irrigation lines, and is prone to toppling over if she finds herself on a bit of a slope and turns around too quickly, but her determination to be part of the pack hasn't diminshed. Tonight, I will toast to my poochy's indefatigable spirit. Love her.
Happy birthday V2!

Independence Day: 2020.
Happy 244th birthday, America!
Being in the midst of a pandemic may have dampened this year's festivities for most Americans, but not for Vinodog 2. Donning yet another pair of patriotic, but cheap, sunglasses she is ready for any fun today will bring (which may include a little ZZ Top).
Around the USA, Independence Day celebrations have been drastically curtailed this year, but I hope everyone can find some joy in the spirit of the holiday.
And remember, be grateful and gracious.
Oh...and God Save the Queen.

Happy 2020 from V2.
It's a fact. I have been rather conspicuous in my absence from posting on Vinsanity, but I'm hoping to remedy that in 2020. Besides, my little party animal, Vinodog 2, wanted to wish everyone, out in the blogosphere, a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. And who am I to resist her requests. So here she is, with her 2020 vision.

Must(cat) you do that?
Apparently, it must. Despite all the rain we have been having, the Orange muscat vines have decided that they need to get a move on. Although bud swell is not determined by atmospheric moisture, but rather by soil temperature, it has been rather cool of late, so I wasn't expecting the vines to be so enthused. Wrong. Again!
The atmospheric moisture came with an earnest all day today. I tried to prune in the Syrah vines, but finally gave up as I was spending more time sheltering in the barn, from rain and hail, than actually out in the vineyard pruning. It was when Vinodog 2 found something to incessantly bark at, in Vinomaker's lumber supply, that I decided to call it a day. It was then that I discovered...

The Geek Squad.
Most lunchtimes will find TWWIAGE's Marketing Queen (MQ) and I huddled together in the winery's kitchen discussing a diverse miscellany of topics; anything from art to zucchini. (Dear reader, you don't have to state the obvious as we both freely admit to being rather geeky.) Yesterday's lunchtime was no exception, however the subject at hand did happen to be one of my favourites - wildflowers.
Whilst the MQ had been out hiking she had spotted and photographed a wildflower that I had never seen before. How exciting! Furthermore, the MQ went on to identify this dainty, but quite dramatic, wildflower as Henderson's shooting star (Dodecatheon hendersonii). Such a discovery scores high on my geek-o-meter. So, imagine how thrilled I was when, today, I spotted a couple of shooting stars whilst Vinodog 2 and I were out walking. (V2 is the black and white bokeh in the photograph.) What were the chances? Perhaps simply an example of frequency illusion, I was nonetheless excited to discover the shooting stars growing in close proximity to Vinoland.
It is my hope, after suffering through so much rain this winter, that the array of wildflowers this spring will be full of new discoveries for me and the MQ.

Make haste.
Some nice sunny, springlike weather today was exactly what I needed to get a start on pruning the Syrah vines. I would have started yesterday, but the wind was just too strong. Armed with my Felcos (actually, I grabbed a pair of Vinomaker's as I couldn't locate either of mine), and a pair of loppers for the big cuts, I headed out into the vineyard with my trusty Vinodog 2 bringing up the rear. That was until V2 spotted the neighbour's horses. It was then that the quiet, contemplative discipline that is pruning quickly devolved into an uproarious disturbance. Sigh.

The 2019 routine.
My immediate 2019 routine, well, starting pretty soon, will consist of pruning, training and other vineyard operations. I have at least a dozen vines that need replanting due to them being dead, or dying. And two end posts that have died and need replacing. All fun stuff.
A happy 2019 to all!

December sun.
Even though, at this time of year, I always think I'd like to experience a white Christmas (snow, icicles, the whole shebang), I have to admit that a cold, but sunny, California December day is rather hard to beat. There is nothing I like better between Christmas and the New Year celebrations than going for long walks with Vinodog 2. I know V2 really enjoys our promenades also.
Today was no exception, strolling around V2's favourite off-leash dog area, in Alston Park on the west side of the valley, surrounded on three sides by vineyards (to further entertain me), it was cool, but not cold, and very bright. V2 and I lingered until the sun began to dip behind the trees.
Although high winds are forecast for tomorrow, New Year's Eve, it still will be dry and sunny. I am hoping that January 2019 will be like January 2015 when not one drop of rain fell in Napa. Now that's my type of winter. Shine on, sun!

A Christmas dear.
Today, I had intended to festoon and bedeck Vinoland in copious amounts of Christmas finery. But, alas, the fairy lights on my pre-lit, artificial Christmas tree decided not to light. I really hate when that happens. (Aforementioned tree is now in the garbage.)
So, to infuse some Christmas cheer back into my unilluminated-mood, I decided to decorate Vinodog 2 instead. Isn't she a little dear? I feel better already. Ho, ho, ho!

Happy 11th Birthday V2!
I can't believe it, Vinodog 2 turns 11 years old today. Again, I ask, how did that happen? Tempus fugit, etc.
After a decade of silly birthday hats, I seem to have exhausted the options available to me in the local shops, so I'm recycling a hat this year. I hope V2 doesn't mind. Actually, I know she doesn't. My little fluffy-bundle of fun is more interested in toys, treats, walkies and, the aforementioned, fun.

Independence Day, 2018.
Vinodog 2 (looking a lot like the cute canine-superheroine she is) and I would like to wish all American peeps a very joyous Independence Day.
Before composing this post, I took a quick look at Vinsanity's 'Independence Day' posts all the way back to the first one in 2009. The overwhelming sentiments in each post are ones of pride and patriotism, both admirable qualities that this particular Englishwoman recognises in most Americans. Last year's post, however, is still, if not even more, relevant this year. If anyone living in America right now would prefer to exist under the tyrannical regimes of North Korea, China, Russia or Iran, please, feel free to go and try to live a life of personal liberty in one of those godforsaken countries. Just sayin'.
God bless the United States of America. (I'll even, albeit hesitatingly, include California and New York in my humble benediction.)

Summer's here!
Yay! It's summer and Vinodog 2 has decided to don her ice cream goggles and embrace the change in season. We haven't had much of a summer yet in the Napa Valley, but "hope springs eternal in the human breast." Or is that, hope summers eternal...? Just kidding.
V2 is a very happy little dog despite her often dour countenance in photographs, these silly sunglasses just serve to heighten her rosy outlook on life. And she makes me extremely happy as she is my ever-present companion in all my viticultural adventures. However, I hope she doesn't expect to wear those sunglasses out in the vineyard today, that would be just plain embarrassing. I may love V2 to death, but I'm still English. Standards, you know, old chap.
Happy summer solstice, peeps!

Branching out.
Vinodog 2 and I get a little bored on our regular walk sometimes, so, now and again, we like to branch out and try new routes. For several months now, we have been ambling, daily, up the hill behind Vinoland. Well, it's not exactly ambling for me and I'm quite sure V2 finds the extremely steep section at the top a little easier on her four legs than I do on my two. Phew!
It is on this daily walk that my dog and I just recently became acquainted with Phacelia ramosissima, commonly known as brancing phacelia. A winsome little weed that is part of the Boraginaceae family (its familiar curving cyme did indeed remind me of fiddlenecks), branching phacelia can be very variable in appearance. The local phacelia has white flowers, but they can also be blue; it can be prostrate or upright; it can be hairless to very hairy; it can have bell or funnel shaped flowers. Interestingly, or at least I think it is interesting, like Vitis vinifera, this phacelia species is hermaphroditic.
I have no idea who the tiny interloping insect is.

Merry Dogmas!
This festive little poochie wants to wish everyone a very happy Christmas. My little Vinodog 2 certainly enjoyed opening her presents this morning, especially the edible one. And as far as I am concerned, I want to wish one and all a very safe and merry Yuletide. "For it is in giving that we receive." St. Francis of Assisi (and approved by V2).

Happy Halloween: 2017.
I started the month off with a photograph of Vinodog 2, so I'll finish the month off with another. My adorable little imp is probably going to enjoy some California sun this afternoon, whilst I go out trick-or-treating with some little imps over here.
It's not exactly cold right now in Blighty, it is quite mild, but it's not exactly California either. This morning, Thud, Mrs. Thud and I enjoyed a very pleasant walk along the beach at New Brighton, a town across the River Mersey from Liverpool. New Brighton, once a seaside-resort destination for Liverpudlians, is nowadays blessed with the singular advantage of having a superb riverfront view of Liverpool. There was no wind, which was unbelievable, so we did not get blown all over the place.
Our sandy perambulation was enhanced by a RAF fly-by (the pilot navigating along the shoreline, no doubt headed to RAF Valley on Angelsey) and the rumble of distant machine-gunfire (soldiers training) from Altcar Rifle Range, some 15 miles north of Liverpool. Cool.
Happy Halloween, ghoulies and ghosties.

Terrific and 10!
It is Vinodog 2's 10th birthday today - that's 70 in dog years. Wow!
V2 has had a great day so far; bacon for breakfast, a new squeaky toy (to destroy) and a nice morning walk. She is now having a snooze next to me. It's a dog's life.
And here is my favourite, fabulous, fun poochie (in a recent photograph) channeling her British heritage. Look how grey she is getting: her black bits used to be jet black. Oh well, it happens to us all.
Happy birthday V2!

Independence Day, 2017.
Happy 241st birthday America!
Vinodog 2 and I want to wish everyone a very happy 4th of July. This adorable American poochie, of British heritage, will be partying alongside her English mum and her American dad.
Nowhere is perfect, but the U.S. of A. still seems to be the destination of choice for the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free." I'll add just one small caveat: one should love America once one is here.
God bless America.
Oh...and God save the Queen!
